We look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, check out these questions below…we may already have the answer for you!
What kind of wood do you use to make doors?
There are different types for wood interior and exterior doors. For interior, we generally use basswood or poplar. Interior doors can also be made of red oak.
For exterior the choices are much more limited. Mostly (80%) are made of Sapele mahogany. Almost all the other doors are made of white oak. Other woods that can be used include cypress, and black locust.
Isn't mahogany really expensive?
No. Mahogany is the wood we use for general purpose exterior use. At the wholesale level, mahogany prices are really no different —and sometimes lower — than other hardwoods such as cherry or maple, an even some grades of pine.
Why do you make shelves out of plywood?
Because solid wood is much more expensive to use and it has a tendency to crack over time. Plywood can be used in very wide widths that lumber (solid wood) is not available in, and therefore would have to be joined. A set of shelves made of solid wood would probably cost 2x to 3x times the amount as the same in plywood. Plywood is also available in many different wood species and grades, and it’s a very useful material for the right applications, such as shelves.
Do you install what you make?
Yes. We can install anything we make in the shop. Be aware however, that installation costs are often a significant and sometimes larger amount than the cost of the piece itself. Installation is time consuming and labor intensive, and we need to charge for that.
Do you perform repairs?
Yes. We perform repairs on site, and also at our shop.
Can i have my piece painted?
Yes, we have a full commercial spray booth where we apply lacquers, varnishes and paints. We can do color matching and restoration work as well.
What’s the difference between tempered, laminated and insulated glass?
Plain glass is usually called plate glass, or annealed glass. However plain glass is not very strong and it tends to shatter into dangerously large pieces. Also, plate glass does not meet the building code for doors, or for windows less than 24 inches from the ground. Tempered glass has been heat treated and is roughly 4x the strength as regular plate glass. When tempered glass is broken it breaks into tiny little shards, which is much less dangerous.
Laminated glass is 2 pieces of glass joined together with a piece of adhesive plastic. When broken, laminated glass sticks together and maintains most of its integrity.
Insulated glass is 2 pieces of glass separated by a spacer and is used on exterior windows to prevent heat transfer. Insulated glass can be made with tempered glass for a stronger and energy efficient door or window.
